evince printing setting

Whatever you set evince's (version 2.3) printing setting to `Shrink to Printable Area', it can not remember. A solution is found in gnome's mailing list (https://mail.gnome.org/archives/evince-list/2010-August/msg00006.html):

Edit the `print-settings' file (~/.gnome2/evince/print-settings). Under the `[Print Settings]' section, add: evince-print-setting-page-scale=2. 0 is ``None"; 1 is ``Shrink to Printable Area"; 2 is ``Fit to Printable Area".

My printing configuration's default paper size is US letter. If printing non-letter size documents (e.g. A4), some content can not be nicely printed out. To fix it, select the 'Scale to fit' tick box in printer configuration (gnome):

System -> Administration -> Printing -> Job Options tab

CUPS问题解决

今天应系统提示升级了CUPS，谁知道竟无法再从EVINCE中打印文档（奇怪的是在另一SPARC机器上却操作依然正常），一直提示：printer-stopped。折腾了两个小时解决。

先进入CUPS管理台：

http://localhost:631/printers/

发现这里显示的打印机已经停止，指示用户再次启动打印机。再细看CUPS识别出的打印机型号并非前面安装的型号。只好运行FOOMATIC重新对打印机进行驱动安装，并在CUPS管理台中重启动打印机。问题解决。

问题的原因可能是因为先前是手工提取并安装的驱动程序（CUPS在我当前的DEBIAN中并没有附带我打印机的驱动），现在进行CUPS升级时对我的打印机驱动程序进行了错误的更新。

debian etch 非中文环境下的中文打印

debian etch 非中文环境下（我目前的升级版本是 r2）默认只能打印西文，所有中文打印出来都变成了方框。解决方案如下：
1）安装非自由软件 Ghostscript 的套件 gs-cjk-resource，cmap-adobe-gb1（简体中文），以及 cmap-adobe-cns1（繁体中文），这需要配置 apt 的资源列表/etc/atp/sources.list：deb http://ftp.debian.org/ etch main contrib non-free。添加后执行：aptitude update。然后安装前述套件：aptitude install gs-cjk-resource；aptitude install cmap-adobe-gb1；aptitude install cmap-adobe-cns1。
2）重新安装一种 TrueType 字体，文泉驿的正黑体已经非常好，目前，我从这里找到安装资源：http://wqy.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi?ZenHei。这个页面上可以找到做好的 debian 安装包，下载后执行：dpkg -i wqy-zenhei*.deb。星号代表实际包的版本。

此时已经可以正常打印中文了，但因为文泉驿的正黑体是矢量字体，在液晶屏幕上显示很漂亮，但在 CRT 上仍显模糊，可以安装文泉驿点阵宋体用于屏幕，目前可以在这里找到安装资源：http://wqy.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi?BitmapSong。同样有 debian 安装包提供，安装指令同前。安装该点阵字体后，在 gnome 桌面环境下指定所有字体为 WenQuanYi Bitmap Song 即可。有些应用程序，如 gedit，iceweasel 等仍需分别予以指定。

现在，在普通屏幕分辨率下的字体显示已经非常令人满意了，而且，CUP 在中文打印过程中会自动选择文泉驿正黑体字体，打印效果也很好了。
